Chelsea Flower show of the year 2009
Chelsea Flower Show is an amazing phenomenon. From the spectator's point of view there's nearly too much to take in. The large show gardens, in particular, can seem overwhelming: a handful of world-class designers put on a stunning display at the best, at the peak of their powers, most influential flower show on earth. One of the main points about a garden is enclosure, which is essentially absent from a showground. Chelsea is always packed, with 160,000 visitors over five days, so one stands with hundreds of others at the borders of the plots, so you can't acquire a proper look, can't get the true feel. The space has to succeed or fail directly – like a fashion show, what's there needs perfect structure, exquisite planting and sophisticated use of color.
